Breed Highlight: Siberian Husky

Siberian_Husky_BreedKnown for its eagerness to work and incredible endurance, the Siberian Husky is a resilient, medium-to-large size dog breed with a loving, happy-go-lucky attitude. While highly energetic when young, they become relaxed, docile dogs that are loyal to their families, good with children and friendly with strangers. That said, they’re not considered the best watchdogs since they’re so social and rarely bark. Extremely trainable, this bright breed tends to obey best with humans who assert authority and a strong will.

Bred in northeast Asia’s harsh environment and cold climate as sled dogs, Siberians have a thick, double-layer coat consisting of a dense cashmere-like undercoat and a longer, coarse topcoat. Fur colors range from black to pure white with a variety of markings, and almond-shaped eyes are dark blue, pale blue, brown or amber – or a combination. Typically easy to care for, their thick coats required weekly brushing and daily exercise.

On the health front, Siberian Huskies are prone to eye issues, hip dysplasia and a skin disorder known as zinc responsive dermatitis that responds well to zinc supplements and zinc-rich food (beef, lamb, and spinach). High quality foods that are rich in protein and vitamins will help maintain healthy skin and coat.
